For our last discussion, you’ll examine your everyday life and experiences from a sociological perspective, with particular focus on marriage and the family. This assignment is designed to encourage you to notice how ideas, actions, and representations of marriage and the family function in our everyday lives — and how these illustrate our taken for granted reality of these interactions. You’ll take two (2) photos and analyze how they connect to course material.
Photos: Your 2 photographs should be of things, events, or people that you notice as you go about your regular activities. Through these photos, you will work to make visible how institutional arena of family/marriage is portrayed through our everyday lives. You may also stage photographs to poignantly offer some insight into how sociology informs your daily lived experience of these taken for granted realities. Both photos must be originals, and you must either take them or be in them. They cannot be screen captures off your computer or photos of other images.
You can, however, stage photos, and/or incorporate pre-existing images as long as the photo is original in some way. For example, you may not simply take a photograph of an advertisement, but you may take a picture of a friend reading the ad. You can take photos of yourself, your friends, and/or your family – you could stage family roles, defy norms, or discuss family of affinity/fictive kinship. Be sure to get permission to take their picture and let them know what it will be used for. You may take photos of people in public places but not where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy (e.g., doctor’s office). Be aware of privacy concerns. If you would like to take photos of strangers, you should get their permission or take the photo at a distance sufficient that they cannot be identified. No nudity, no pictures of anyone participating in illegal behavior, and nothing that harms anyone else, physically or psychologically. If you have any doubt about the eligibility of a photo, ask me.
Attach your two photos to your post. Be sure to embed the images, points will be taken off if you don’t embed the image. For each photo, you should do the following:
Include a title
Describe what is happening in the photograph.
Explain how the photograph connects to the course using theory, concepts, readings, statistics, or other materials. Examine if and how your photograph challenges, supports, qualifies, and/or builds upon what you’ve learned in class.
You may want to include any important details about what was happening before/after/during the captured image, particularly anything that is not included in the picture.
How were you feeling when you took the photo? How do you feel now reflecting back on it? Did anything surprise you or stand out to you when you taking the photo?
The “questions” for this assignment are simply addressing all parts. The description (1), How the photograph connects to the course (2), and the reflection (3). Don’t forget your word counts and to embed the images.
