DB5: Observations on Language
Primary Post
As we learn more about language, we begin to observe language and communication in a new way. The way
language changes over time is a particularly interesting point of study.
This Atlantic article, entitled, “Teens aren’t Ruining Language (Links to an external site.) from 2016 discusses
language changes and how new words develop, evolve, and fall in and out of “hipness”. (An added bonus of this
article being from 2016 is that we can see how the years that have passed have affected the words they discuss.)

Read the article and watch the two short videos within, then share with the class your discussion of the following
topics:
Part 1: Select an excerpt from the article or one of the videos that you found to shine insight on how language
changes and comment on it’s relevance and why you found it interesting.
Part 2: Identify and define a word you either have heard used or use yourself that maybe wasn’t around a few years ago.
Responses
Respond to two classmates making sure to comment on their ideas to further the conversation by bringing your
own ideas into it. You can compare and contrast your thoughts and their thoughts. You can bring in examples that
support or refute their points.
Your post should be ~4-6 sentences.
