Scenario Description
A Maryland State Trooper arrested a man, who was driving erratically on I-95S. The man will not talk to law enforcement. Upon fingerprinting the individual, it was determined that the FBI wanted him in connection to a series of violent crimes. A Special Agent of the FBI’s Baltimore Field Office (BFO) obtained a warrant to search the car belonging to the man and to search any recovered digital media. The Special Agent had the FBI’s Computer Analysis Response Team (CART) make a forensic image of a USB flash drive, which was recovered from the car. The forensic image has been provided to you.
You are to analyze the USB flash drive and create a report with investigative leads for the Special Agent.
Deliverable Requirements:
· In the report you are to describe your forensic methods and your results. When describing your forensic methods, you are not to provide step-by-step instructions on how to use software or forensic tools. Instead you are to state what you did, why you did it, i.e., what makes it important/relevant, and how you did it from a high-level point of view. For example, you might state that you created a hash of a file in order to uniquely identify that file. The hash can be used to confirm the integrity of the file and ensure that the file was not modified or changed during analysis. A hash is a string of numbers that can be used to uniquely identify a file much like a digital fingerprint. The hash was created with software, i.e. HashCalc, which uses a variety of hashing algorithms.
· Many forensic examiners frequently use tables to present information. This is not a requirement, but many students find this helpful given the page constraints.
· You may assume the warrant was obtained and fulfilled in a lawful manner.
· You may assume that the chain of custody form is being handled separately and does not need to be addressed in this report.
· The report is to be submitted in Microsoft Word.
· The Word document is to have one-inch margins and written in 11- or 12-point font.
· The report must not exceed three pages.
· No cover page is to be included with the report.
· The report is to be submitted via Blackboard for grading in accordance with the due date specified in the syllabus.
· All analysis and report writing is to be performed independently and without the assistance of others.
