It will enable you identify in writing the major objectives of the course and the Content Knowledge associated with the Course Objectives.
SKILLS TO ACQUIRE
This assignment will help you master several important skills necessary to performing writing tasks in college and engaging with ideas and values that are foundational to a well-rounded university education.
• Identify literary genres, major writers, and important schools of thought in American literature from the pre-colonial era to the end of the 18th century.
• Summarize, interpret, and analyze literary texts in relation to a specific argumentative thesis.
• Utilize and extend the reading, writing, and critical thinking skills developed in ENGL 1101 and ENGL 1102.
• Identify the cultural factors that shaped American literature and define the common concerns and values of humanity as expressed through literature.
TASKS TO COMPLETE
You should choose texts that you find interesting and believe you can write about in an engaging manner. You will want to support your response not only with good logic and explanations on your part but also with pertinent quotes from the primary texts that pertain to the question you have chosen.
Your response should be in the form of a typical essay (five paragraphs), with a short introduction, thesis statement, supporting paragraphs including direct textual evidence and analysis, and conclusion. Follow MLA format conventions.
Your essay should total at least 750 words (excluding the included wording of the question itself).
QUESTION
The final subsection of our course is titled ″American Literature Legacies,″ but this heading could be applied to any of the texts we explore in ENGL 2131. The Cambridge Dictionary defines a ″legacy″ as ″something that is a part of your history or that remains from an earlier time.″ Choose two primary texts from two different units in this course that you believe are part of a legacy–they have a clear, direct bearing on a single specific element of American culture, American literature, American identity, American current events, or American values today. Be specific in your focus: direct textual evidence from both primary texts should be used to demonstrate their relevance to one particular element of America today. Discuss what elements from the texts still linger, explore what elements have changed, and analyze why.
(As an example, if one were using this prompt in a British literature course, one could write about how Isabella Beeton′s Book of Household Management [1861] and Coventry Patmore′s poem ″The Angel in the House″ [1854] both frame kitchen work as noble and innately British, an idea that is maintained in the modern TV show The Great British Bake-Off. However, the texts′ idea of baking as exclusively married women′s work has changed, as reflected by the diversity of the current contestants on the show. Then you would further explore the ″why″ and ″how″ of these similarities and differences.
As another example, if one were using this prompt in an American Literature post-Civil War course, one could write about how William Faulkner′s short story ″A Rose for Emily″ [1930] and Ellen Glasgow′s short story ″Dare′s Gift″ [1917] were key to creating significant Southern Gothic tropes, such as seemingly inevitable but sudden violence and the decay of once-flourishing spaces that reflect the decay of the social fabric. These tropes are reflected in the modern TV show The Walking Dead, although the show does not focus on class distinctions as the primary catalyst for the violence and decay as the short stories do. Then you would further explore the ″why″ and ″how″ of these similarities and differences.)
