4. Post in the discussion Who decides what is morally right? To get a better understanding of philosophical arguments and the connection between morality and religion as well as against the position of cultural relativism read the following articles posted under Supplementary Readings:

Morality and religion
Do you agree that without the fear of God, people would have no reason to act morally? Do you think people need to be religious in order to be moral? Even if you answered “No” to the former question, religious people could still argue that even if you personally can be moral without being religious, humanity in general never could, because God’s commandments are really the source of all morality, the source of all our ideas about right and wrong. Do you agree?
Would human beings ever be able to understand right from wrong without religion? Is it true that there would be no absolute moral values, if there was no God, that everything would become relative, so that everything would be right, and nothing would be right? If this is so, how come people, who are the closest to God: priests, monks, and nuns, sometimes commit heinous deeds? In other words: if it is true that being religious is necessary for morality, why isn’t it also sufficient?
Think about the situation in our society today. Do you think our society made a moral progress in the last 20 years (or 50, or 100 years), or has there been a moral decline? If you perceive a moral decline in the society, would you agree it is due to the diminished role of religion in our lives? If not, what do you think causes it?
Think about the social role of religion in America today. Do you think there might be some truth to Marxist claims, i.e. that rich and powerful foster religion to divert common people from seeking justice here on Earth? Religious people argue that even if we lived in a just society, even if there were no wars, or exploitation of the poor, there would have still been tragedies caused by accidents, natural disasters, and diseases. Life would have still been absurd, if we didn’t have the hope offered to us by religion. To the skeptical question “How can God who is all-powerful and all-good allow all the bad things to happen?”, the religious respond with a counter question: “But how could we endure all this if we didn’t have hope?” Who do you think is right?
You don’t need to address all the questions, however, your initial post needs to be substantial, revealing your general attitude regarding the relationship between morality and religion and the reasons in support of it.
