Resourse: The Unfinished Nation: A Concise History of the American People
by Alan Brinkley
Written in Times New Roman 12
Explore, comprehend, and explain:
1. Reconstruction (1865-1877), its programs and strategies, ts opponents, and the extent if its success and failures.
and,
2. The Nineteenth-Century Industrial Revolution, how and why it accelerated in rural and urban areas in the United States, and its effects upon populations and the environment.
Purpose:
This assignment focuses on improving the skills of gathering, analyzing, and communicating information. The exercise involves the examination of “Reconstruction,” a federal policy designed to politically and economically reincorporate eleven southern states back into the Union after the Civil War.
Overview:
A catastrophic civil war brought extreme and unforeseeable changes to the nation. One of the more positive changes was the illegalization of human slavery within the country.
But questions remained. What was going to happen to the four million formerly enslaved people? How would they relate to former owners? What opportunities would they have in American society? What role did the federal government have in securing their safety within the US?
Project:
Examine both the textbook and the lecture materials regarding Reconstruction in the US. Gather any evidence (statistics, examples, and events) that deal with the following question: How Successful or Unsuccessful was Reconstruction in securing the Rights of Former Slaves?
Instructions: Step 1, gather evidence (statistics, events, and examples) from your textbook and class lectures concerning Reconstruction and its relation to African American rights from the end of the Civil War to the later 1800s.
Step 2, analyze the evidence. Write what YOU find to be the most significant evidence to the question of how successful or unsuccessful Reconstruction was for African Americans. Note that “success” is a relative term, and that essentially no event is totally successful or totally a failure. Be specific with your evidence in describing what worked well, what did not, and why.
Step 3, communicate your findings honestly to yourself and others. In this formal analytical argument, write a 2-3 page minimum paper (plus a Works Cited Page, which does not count in your page count), showing your conclusions from your analyses, and the copious evidence (statistics, events, and examples) that led you to those conclusions. Then go to the “Course Work” tab, select “Assignments,” and submit your paper in the appropriate folder.
Note: In this paper, you will need to use facts and figures from the textbook readings and video lectures as source material to back up your statements. Anywhere you state facts, you must have an MLA style in-text parenthetical citation within the body of your paper. Each missed citation will cost you points and if you give me a paper without MLA style in-text parenthetical citations, you will receive a grade of ZERO because no citations = plagiarized. Any act of plagiarism will result in a zero for the assignment and disciplinary action. A second confirmed act of plagiarism will merit removal from the class. In addition to your citations, within the body of your paper you MUST INCLUDE a MLA style Works Cited Page at the end of your paper. This Works Cited Page does not count in your page length.
