For
this FTA paper watch one of the 4 films offered. Please choose just one
technical aspect of the filmmaking process such as cinematography,
editing, lighting, sound design, music, costume design, visual effects,
make-up, or set design to focus on. You may relate that topic to its use
to convey the film’s themes – but again – do not recap story or plot.
1950s & 1960s (pick any one) Can be found on:
Alice in Wonderland (1951) Disney+
Guys and Dolls (1955) Kanopy
It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) Amazon Prime
The Wild Bunch (1969) HBO Max
Focus and write about only one technique in each paper. Some non-tech
topics to avoid are things like acting, directing, and writing –
there’s much more to those aspects that goes beyond (or does not
include) film tech.
These papers are designed to breakdown the technical filmmaking
elements in order to understand them and how they are used to serve the
film overall.
Your papers should be organized into paragraphs (like the examples
below) and include detailed descriptions of at least three specific
scenes or overall thematic examples of your chosen tech topic from the
film. The overall organization should be:
Paragraph #1 – Intro of film and tech topic
Paragraph #2 – Description and assessment of example #1
Paragraph #3 – Description and assessment of example #2
Paragraph #4 – Description and assessment of example #3
(Additional paragraphs and examples/observations if desired)
Final Paragraph – Summation of overall thoughts and conclusion. NO NEW EXAMPLES.
All papers should include a title page (see paper examples in
EAGLE in the first FTA assignment), be written in Times New Roman 12
Point Font, black text, 350 words or more (don’t be afraid to go longer
as the best papers generally do), and double-spaced. Include your word
count on the title page or in the submission comments box on EAGLE when
submitting your work. You must use the MLA format, cite any of your
sources from outside the film within the body of the text, and include a
comprehensive works cited page if needed.
These papers are analysis and not research papers. They are to be
based on your own observations and interpretations from watching the
film. You do not need research from outside the film. You should use
your knowledge from the readings and weblinks in class to interpret the
technique on your own. If you do include research from outside the film
to make a point or to clarify something, you must then include in-text
citations and a works cited page. This reference material should also
not constitute more than 25% of the paper.
All papers will be turned in online via the EAGLE assignment
dropbox and no late papers will be accepted for any reason. When you
submit a paper it must be in the .pdf file format. NO OTHER FORMATS WILL
BE ACCEPTED.
On the due date of the analysis paper, please go to the Film Technique Analysis Discussion.
Here you will give us a brief run down of your paper and this is also
the place where you can tell us about the plot if you like. You are
required to respond to at least two
separate responses from your classmates for each film technique
analysis discussion. The 75 word minimum applies to this discussion as
well, but you do not need outside weblinks or questions in your replies
to your classmates. Response is due 1 week after paper was due.
Good luck with them! If you have any questions don’t hesitate to
message me. (Monday, July 4th is a school holiday so this won’t be due
until 10pm on the 5th.)
