This is a formal essay assignment that showcases
your understanding and application of two intercultural communication theories in
the text of the film “American Factory”. The two theories are a) Kluckhohn and
Strodtbeck’s Value Orientation; b) Hofstede’s Value Dimensions. p.42-51

Your
tasks
Please write a three- to four-page essay (font Times New
Roman, size 12, double-space) connecting the film to the ideas you learned in
the two theories about different cultural values across the globe. The essay should
do ONE of the following:

Focus on one theme of
cultural difference from the theories that you see as significantly reflected
in the film (e.g. “Cultural Differences of Individualism and Collectivism
Reflected in Film American Factory”), and discuss in detail using examples
and evidences from the movie that represent that cultural difference
·
Connect your own viewing experience with the film and discuss the cultural knowledge you
learned using the tool of the two theories (e.g. Reflecting on my middle-class New
York student identity watching “American Factory”)
·
Expand upon the discussion of one
particular character’s intercultural journey or identity from the film
using one of both of the theories.
·
Think about how complex and messy
the real story is in the documentary film in contrast to the clean, close-structured
categories of values the theories provide. Critique the theories using
evidences from the film.

Factory. Read your textbook (p.42-51), watch the lecture videos repeatedly
and re-watch the film if you need to.

dimensions of the two theories. Focus on the ones you see as significant in the
film.
