You will write an essay that analyzes the similarities and differences in their approach to discussing the issues plaguing their time period. You will use the point-by-point or block method to organize your ideas in the body of the essay, and use textual support from both readings in the form of summary, paraphrase and quotation.

Goals: Students will:

Produce multi-page essays that synthesize ideas from two or more related texts and integrate source material, including quotations
Write using complex sentence structure, without a pattern of errors

(Clearly states the similarities and differences between the two texts’ approaches to creating change; appears near the end of the introduction; 1-2 sentences in length)

(Gives substantial evidence from both texts to support the thesis statement; evidence presented using summary, paraphrase and/or quotation)
Citation: /10
(Includes a signal phrase before the each supporting detail with the writer)
Analysis: /30
(Makes the connection between each piece of evidence and the thesis; analyzes details of word choice)
Organization: /10
(Interesting introduction that builds to thesis and includes a summary of both texts; support presented in logical order in the body; conclusion moves beyond summary)
Editing/Length: /10
(Uses proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar; 5 paragraphs)
