T‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌his assignment provides you with the opportunity to explore and write about an issue or question that interests you by focusing on specific perspectives of that issue. I’ve designed the assignment to resemble the types of academic writing you are likely to be asked to do when you transfer to a college or university, or when you write reports in workplace settings. Thus, in addition to studying the issue or question you select, you also will be studying the process for conducting research and writing an academic paper. This project will consist of several interim assignments, as well as a final assignment that is your report.
Your work begins as you choose a topic and pose a question to explore about that topic, which should be somewhat related to a theme we touched upon in the Discussion Unit. You will need to incorporate two articles (or videos) we have used in the Discussion Unit in your research paper.
Since this is a research paper you are going to work on for the remainder of the semester, I encourage you to find a topic that is not only interesting to you but also can benefit you beyond passing this class.
Controversial and generic topics, such as gun control, abortion, death penalty, legalization of recreational drugs, and Medicare for all, should be avoided.
Your exploration will focus on examining scholarly sources that you locate via databases available at the Century library web site or web sites available at other libraries. You will identify an audience that is considering the question that you are exploring because they need to make a decision; to begin your research, you will identify critical perspectives your audience needs to consider when making its decision. Then you will focus your work on 2 of those perspectives, studying and writing about them in detail—focusing on what credible experts learn from their research and then report in literature; you also will learn enough about several other perspectives (minimum, 3) to summarize them in your inquiry paper, thereby alerting your audience that they need to consider those perspectives as well.
Your research and resulting paper are intended to inform your audience, not to persuade them to make any particular decision. You are identifying and explaining the knowledge that your audience needs to have, and the issues your audience needs to consider, when making a decision about your issue/inquiry question.
Specifications of the completed inquiry paper:
10 to 12 pages plus Works Cited page
MLA (8th edition) format for the paper and all citations (both in-text and Works Cited)
A minimum of 10 credible sources of our own (4 to 5 sources for each of the 2 perspectives; 2 to 3 sources for background information and the “other perspectives.” Two of the sources can be credible web sites; all other sources must be scholarly sources located through Century College databases or other libraries)
