Your assignment is to write a short essay (about five pages) that discusses settings in Beowulf and themes in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. To do this, please write two-three pages on Beowulf that discuss the major settings in the poem. Please consider both the large-scale settings (e.g., the century and countries in which the poem is set) as well as at least two specific locations within the poem. Please support your claims by providing at least three citations/quotations from the poem. Then write two-three pages that discuss at least two major themes of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, providing at least three citations/quotations from the text (note that the same themes tend to show up in multiple places). Remember that themes tell us what the story is about and are the deeper issues that emerge from the action of the story, and that most stories have more than one theme. For example, in Beowulf we might observe the themes of good vs. evil, man vs. nature, light vs. darkness, honor, revenge, and/or wealth. The poem does not offer overt moral lessons on any of these, but the ideas emerge repeatedly and there are implicit lessons one might discern (e.g., wealth is celebrated and helps society to function, but its association with the dragon shows it in a negative light as well).
There is no need for a formal introduction or conclusion or for any sort of transition between the two halves of the essay. Our focus at this point is on paying close attention to the literary works and writing clearly about them.
