Based upon the works read in the Naturalism period, what characteristics make up the American hero? How has the hero changed since Realism? Find textual evidence from works read this semester by two of the following authors—Wharton, Crane, and London.
Though they share the Naturalism genre, Wharton’s subject matter differs from Crane and London yet the theme of survival underscores all of their works. Compare and contrast survival in one of Wharton’s works to either work by Crane or London. How is the theme of survival similar? How do they differ? What does this reveal about the state of men and women in America at the turn of the 20th Century? Utilize textual evidence from each work used to support responses.

Choose two authors—one listed on the syllabus under Modernism and one listed under The Harlem Renaissance—and choose two symbols from their works. Discuss the importance of each symbol (four symbols total) to the work’s overall theme. Provide textual evidence from both authors used to give credence to replies.
Frost’s poetry is representative of the Modernism Period of American Literature. Along with Frost, choose two other authors—one listed on the syllabus under Modernism and one listed under The Harlem Renaissance—and elaborate upon how each of the three authors’ works are representative of the period.
