“Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. Wellness is more than being free from illness; it is a dynamic process of change and growth. Wellness requires primarily positive perspectives and values by which to live. It also requires a strong sense of purpose and conscious, deliberate action.†– Global Wellness Day®
One goal of this class is to make you more aware of disability as a social construct and to bring a greater understanding of wellness in relation to living and thriving with a disability in today’s society. We have explored myths and stigmas about disability, as well as issues of access and accommodations across multiple environments.
The culmination of materials and assignments in this course had the purpose of helping broaden your perspectives and understand how to identify societal barriers and challenges that can limit wellness / well-being in yourself and others. Further, this course illuminates the need for social advocacy to implement structural changes to help all people live more strength-based and socially just lives.
The purpose of this final assignment is for students to describe how they will live their life in a way that is more aware and inclusive of individuals with disabilities. There are two options for this how you will write this paper:
If you identify as someone who has a disability, write this personal narrative from your own perspective.
If you do not identify as someone with a disability, write this personal narrative from a more general perspective or from the perspective of a person with a disability that you know very well (family member, close friend).
Specifically, this culminating assignment wants you to use your new knowledge (using specific examples) to address the following areas related to the overall concept of wellness as it related to our course topics. All papers need to include each area, and please organize the paper into Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4 and make sure they are each labeled. All questions do not need to be answered, but they are there to help guide you.
Part 1: Living in Wellness: Current Status
What does wellness for an individual with a disability look like in society right now? Consider the current state of society for someone with a disability. How easy or difficult is it for you/them to achieve physical, emotional, ethical, social and/or financial well-being?
What do you/they need to have to achieve wellness?
What external supports are already common and easily accessible in society to help you/them achieve wellness?
What part does family, community, and cultural beliefs play with living in wellness in society as it is right now?
Part 2: Living in Wellness: Identifying Barriers to Wellness
Identify some big barriers that you/they may face in order to achieve optimal well-being. Include specifics about some of the topics we have talked about this semester (Medical. Vs Social Model, Ableism, Inspiration Porn etc….) and how those things actually impact you/them personally (give examples).
In what ways do these barriers directly impact your/their well-being?
Why do you think society and/or communities have enabled these barriers to continue, and why do you think they are so difficult to change?
What do you think is needed in order for society to remove these barriers? (be specific)
Part 3: Living in Wellness: Developing a Personal Plan for Advocacy
Wellness is a process of change and growth that requires deliberate action. What change in society would you like to see so individuals with disabilities have access to a healthier and fulfilling life? Please give at least 3 action-based and concrete examples of what you personally are going to do to be an advocate for change.
How confident do you personally feel about your ability to be part of making this change?
What external support do you think would assist you to make this change?
Part 4: Living in Wellness: A Changed Future
Summarize how changing how society views and includes individuals with disabilities will impact your/their success, independence, and well-being of individuals with disabilities? (e.g., physical, social, emotional, economical, and cultural wellness).
How does society as a whole benefit from being more equitable to individuals with disability?
Summarize what you personally have learned about yourself and your own beliefs this semester from the topics we have discussed. Do you believe you have already changed how you view individuals with disabilities? If yes, give examples. If no, what would you have liked to learn about but didn’t?
This personal narrative will be 6 pages long, double spaced, with 12-point font, and with 1-inch margins. If you use outside sources, be sure to cite them in the paper and provide a reference list at the end.
