Choose one of the topics and write a six paragraph essay:
Introduction
Four body paragraphs
Conclusion
TOPICS
Consider Nick’s words, “They are a rotten crowd! You’re worth the whole damn bunch put together.” Compare and contrast how Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby are both the true heroes of the novel.
Compare and contrast Daisy Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson to determine which woman is more corrupt.
Which symbol is more important to the overall novel – Valley of the Ashes or the eyes of Dr. Eckleburg?
What is the significance of parties in the novel? Compare and contrast the different parties held throughout the novel.
Analyse the novel from two of the following: Marxist, Psychoanalytic, or Feminist perspective. What insights can be gained from each perspective and which one best illustrates the conflicts in the novel.
Who or what is to blame for the tragedy in the novel? Compare and contrast two of the characters: Tom, Gatsby and/or Daisy, and their influence on the outcome of the story.
Using a feminist lens, who do you have more empathy for/who suffers more in the novel – Daisy or Myrtle?
What poses more conflicts for a person – social mobility or social constraints?
Compare and contrast the friendship of Nick and Gatsby with a novel or television show friendship that has similar elements. If you choose this option, let me know the novel/tv show you are writing about.
Body Paragraphs:
Each set of body paragraphs needs an argument; therefore you need two arguments to formulate your comparison/contrast essay.
Your arguments may consist of the following:
Influence of the American Dream
Impact of gender roles
Decline of social morals
Social class standards
Structure the essay using one of the following:
The first set of body paragraphs looks at each character separately. Eg: On the one hand, the American Dream influences Nick by …. The second paragraph could start: On the other hand, the American Dream affects Gatsby even more.
With your second argument, use the same structure for the next set of body paragraphs.
OR
Explain each of your arguments in two paragraphs (ie: looking at the effect on Nick)
Body paragraphs 3 & 4 give comparison/contrast analysis to Gatsby

Well constructed paragraphs with comparison/contrast analysis
MLA format for embedded citations and Works Cited
