Title : Learning and Development in organisations and how to manage it successfully
Most large organisations nowadays have a learning and development department as part of their human resources division, which is managing the process of developing skills and knowledge of its team members. Additionally, operating departments are providing input that is required in form of training materials and scope of training, if the development is aimed at learning skills or acquiring knowledge that is department specific. These trainings will assist to ensure that new and existing team members are well versed in the required skills, and that they possess the knowledge to complete the tasks and objectives, set by the organisation, satisfactory. Furthermore, identified high potential team members might be enrolled in management and leadership courses to develop them into future managers and leaders of the organisation. This can be viewed as a straight forward process and classified as single-loop learning, as described by Argyris and Schön in 1978, as it is targeted at learning new, or improving existing skills, that are set within clear parameters and boundaries that will benefit the person as well as the organisation (Cleg​‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌​g et al., 2019).
This process of individual learning and development of team members will assist to keep the organisation operating, possibly improving their existing products, and increasing customer satisfaction. However, in order to be successful or to become a market leader, an organisation itself has to be able to learn as a whole as well.
In their report from 2018, Ahmetaj and Daly, “reveals that high performing learning organisations, on average, are seeing a 24% increase in productivity as a result of learning done well” (Ahmetaj & Daly, 2018: 8).
To consider that organisational learning is not only occurring through the influx of knowledge by their employees and management, but also trough adaptation to the environment they are operating within, what processes should be in place to ensure this acquired knowledge is being transferred within the organisations to ensure it remains competitive?
