Melatonin Assignment
Melatonin is basically a hormone supplement that can help with sleeping. It is a supplement that help promote sleeping and helping with short term use for children and adults. Melatonin supplements help with certain condition such as jet lag, which help when people that are traveling and have disturbing sleep during the daytime. It helped with delayed sleep-awake phrase disorder, which help people who have trouble sleeping at usual time. And with any sleep disorder in children and adult who have undesirable effect on their behavior, or daytime functioning. The last thing will be anxiety, which could have an effect on a person sleeping pattern. But melatonin also has different side effect that was report for some short-term studies that was involved in adults, surgical patients and critically ill patients. Which was side effect such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and sleepiness.

Melatonin, being a naturally occurring hormone within the human body, assists in inducing the natural sleep cycle which most people follow (Detwiler et al., 2012). That said, introducing this hormone into the body as a dietary supplement or sleep aid can have both positive and negative effects, depending on the circumstances. When administering melatonin as a sleep aid, specifically for people with insomnia or severe jet lag, there can be a positive effect, resulting in a healthier sleep cycle and a more productive time while awake (Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database Consumer Version, 2018). Contrary to that, taking melatonin as a dietary aid to assist with conditions such as depression, chronic pain, or Covid-19 can be ineffective in the treatment of the condition and, especially in the case of depression, can be detrimental (Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database Consumer Version, 2018).
Melatonin is naturally activated in the body as a hormone which is sent through the blood stream to the suprachiasmatic nuclei within the brain’s hypothalamus (Detwiler et al., 2012). This hormone signals that it is nighttime and is allowed by the hypothalamus to make the body drowsy (Detwiler et al., 2012). Comparatively, chemically based sleep aids work by blocking specific chemicals within the brain, which can create a sedating effect (Harvard Health, 2021). This can be a highly effective means to force drowsiness at the risk of it losing its effectiveness and having to increase potency, as well as long term ties to diseases such as dementia (Harvard Health, 2021).
