The aim of this assessment is for students to demonstrate the ability to work independently under the guidance of your allocated supervisor investigating the literature relating to an area of your nursing practice.
The formative component of the assessment does not contribute towards your final module grade though is instrumental in developing your work and gaining feedback from your supervisor for your summative work. The summative graded assessment comprises one piece of course work and you must achieve 40% or more to pass the module.
Module Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
1. Demonstrate the ability to work independently
2. Critically appraise evidence in relation to an area of practice
For the purposes of this module, a literature review will:
• have only one author (you)
• include ONLY primary studies (e.g. RCTs),
NOT secondary studies (i.e. reviews),
NOT opinion pieces, commentaries or similar.
• have a search strategy with search terms (key words) and Boolean operators

• have an appraisal using ONE basic appraisal tool
e.g. Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) (Guyatt et al., 2011, p. 386)
or
Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP, 2018)
or
Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS)
or
Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practic​‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌​e Model (JHNEBP)
• have searches ONLY undertaken in RESEARCH DATABASES, usually only two or three
e.g. CINAHL, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Medline, Embase
• be conducted over three (3) to six (6) months
• NOT include a meta-analysis
• have recommendations and limitations, presented in the Discussion chapter
• have a word count of up to 9,000 words
• have an abstract with a word count of up to 250 words
• have the references and appendices EXCLUDED from the word count
• have the word count for the abstract up to 250 words
• optionally have appendices. If appendices are used, they should ONLY be complementary – the review should stand without the appendices. For example, appendices may include excluded studies and an empty inclusion process flowchart.
Your literature review will consist of (5) five chapters:
Chapter 1 – Introduction
Chapter 2 – Methods
Chapter 3 – Results
Chapter 4 – Discussion
Chapter 5 – Conclusi
Assessment Content
Your work must demonstrate you achieve learning outcomes 1 and 2 for this module and should be written in an academic manner, following accepted academic practice (structuring your assignment, referencing, academic writing).
Your work will be marked based on the rubric below and you will receive feedback in marking comments and QuickMarks on your submitted assessment in Turnitin.
