Mentoring and coaching supervision is important to both the coach/ mentor and the protege as it supports the coach/ mentor. The purpose for this type of supervision is so that the coach/ mentor can maintain ethical standards, develop themselves in their role, and feel supported, especially in difficult situations (Brockbank & McGill, 2012; Parasol & Leedham, 2017; EMCC, 2022). With a supervisor, coaches and mentors can discuss any ethical issues that they come across, share different perspectives, explore how they should go about a certain situation, and continue to develop as a coach/mentor (EMCC, 2022, Brockbank & McGill, 2012). In order for the supervisor role to be effective, the supervisor should be someone that has a lot of experience in order to support the coach/mentor (Parasol & Leedham, 2017).
EMCC (2022) suggests that a supervisor should have accreditation so that an effective reflective practice can be done and ethical and psychological knowledge can be shared with the coach/ mentor. There are different types of supervision that can be used, such as individual, group, or peer (EMCC, 2022). Although supervision is highly spoken about and recommended, many coaches/ mentors may not have a supervisor as they have costs, may not have time to reflect with a supervisor, and/or do not think it is worth it given that they may not have many proteges (Brockbank & McGill, 2012). What are some other benefits and challenges to having a supervisor?
