St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church
Choose a place to visit either IN-PERSON or ONLINE– using the list you put together of local worship resources in last week’s lesson, choose one place that is outside of your religious practice to visit. For example, if you are a Protestant Christian, you might choose to visit a Catholic Church or a Buddhist service. If you are active in a local church that meets on Sundays at 11 (or thereabouts), many Catholic churches have masses at other times. Additionally, Jewish services are usually on Friday nights and you may find one on a Saturday morning. Local Buddhists and Hindus also have services that will not conflict with your obligations.
Do some homework – if your location has a website, visit the site and become familiar with their beliefs, practices and activities. Contact your location, introduce yourself, via email or phone and tell them what you are doing and why. Do not be nervous about calling and talking to people. You will find that 99% of people are welcoming and willing to help a student complete an assignment as well as share their religious experiences. Ask if there is a leader who might be willing to speak with you. This does not have to be the primary leader, a lay leader is fine. You might even ask for a recommendation as to what service/activity would be best to visit.  If you have problems making contact, don’t hesitate to try another place of worship.  It is your responsibility to ensure the assignment is completed on time.
During your worship visit – be observant. What is the nature of the building?  Are there decorations in the building that you can see? Other forms of art? What are some of the practices/customs you observe? What are the different parts of the liturgy (music, singing, oral/silent prayer, recitations, prostrations, etc.)? Please be detailed with your experience of the service.  Interesting, not interesting; engaging, not engaging?  What are the roles played by the youth/elderly…men/women…leaders/laity?  Remember this is a chance to EXPERIENCE something new, a ceremony or ritual that you have never experienced before.  This is NOT a website review, or research project about the place of worship.
Write your Experience Essay – Write a 3-4 page essay sharing your experience. It should be double spaced and written from your personal point of view. Remember, this should be your first (or one of a very few) visit(s) to this location. I do not expect you to be an expert. I am much more interested in hearing about your feelings about what you experienced. Your essay is due on/before 7/17/22. Write about this place St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church
