There are two major ways to write about literature. The one people know the most about is called close reading. You will practice close reading in the first large writing assignment.
In your close reading, you will choose 3 different texts and perform what the textbook calls explication (see Chap. 4 “Explication” in Perusall) Your goal is to take what seems difficult, curious, puzzling, or subtle and make it explicit and clear for the reader.
One text can be (but doesn’t have to be) one that has been assigned or that we have discussed.
The other two should be texts that we have not read in this class or is used in a sample essay in the book.
You will make your life easier if you choose texts that seem to have something in common, something that ties them together.
It will help to read and review Chapter 5 (Writing about Stories,) Chapter 6 (Writing about Poems,) or Chapter 7 (Writing about Plays) for a refresher on the different literary elements you can use to explicate your texts.
