Module 4: Analytic Essay
Overview
In this analytical essay, you will fully answer the prompt below in your own words, demonstrating your mastery of the psychological and philosophical analytical approaches to mythology. Since these myths were written before the advent of psychology, please use any historical context, information about belief systems, or cultural practices. Please answer in essay form the questions below, and plan on using copious examples from all five myths of this module to back up your answers.
Apply the psychological approach to the five myths in this module (Cupid & Psyche, the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, Oedipus the King, the Twelve Labors of Hercules, and the epic of Gilgamesh), as the approach is outlined in the module exploration. How do you see characters in this myth mature through their flaws in these stories? Please use specific examples from the myths in demonstrating your answer.
Likewise, apply the philosophical approach to the five myths of this module, as the approach is outlined in the module exploration. Which of life’s biggest questions are commented on by these stories, and what do the myths have to say about how to answer these questions? Demonstrate your argument with examples from the myths themselves.
Next, explore relevance to modern narratives by applying the psychological and philosophical approaches to a modern narrative of your choosing from anytime in the past century. Because this narrative is not included in our module readings, you will also need to provide a one-paragraph summary of the narrative for your reader. What insights do you gain from this narrative? Please use specific information in your answer.
Lastly, what do you think is the benefit of using these two particular approaches, psychological and philosophical, in understanding mythology in particular as well as narratives in general? Are there any gains to using these approaches and, if so, what are they?
