The paper must be typed, double spaced and at least five pages in length. The subject must be pre-approved
by the instructor. The subject should deal with United States history from 1877 to modern times.
Why should you write a paper?
Skills in English usage and experience in expressing ideas on paper in a readable and interesting manner can
only be acquired by writing such works. Writing a paper will also give you experience in locating information
quickly and in choosing among available sources, as well as acquaint you with the library resources. It will give
you a broader and more thorough grasp of the subject you have researched. It will also develop your writing
skills and vocabulary, so that you can communicate more effectively.
Format:
Title Paper: This contains the title of your work, your name, the name of the class, the date the paper is due
and the name of your instructor.
Text: This is the body of your work. This must contain no fewer than five pages of typed and double spaced
writing, not to include the title page or the works cited page. It must deal with some segment of United States
history within the time frame of this course and must be pre-approved by the instructor. Papers should be
free of any typing errors, spelling errors, incorrect grammatical usages, incorrect sentence structures and
punctuation errors. It must be typed and double-spaced.
Simply expressed, your research paper should contain the entire story on which you are writing. Do not write
only a part of the history of the subject. An example of this would be: only the early life of George Bush, or
only the first few hours of the Battle of the Bulge. Treat all areas of the paper equally. Write your paper as if
you were trying to explain it to someone who knew nothing about it. Avoid trying to lengthen your paper by
adding extra words just to reach the minimum needed. Select a subject with which you have an interest.
Select a subject that has information that is readily available and is plentiful. Do NOT choose a subject that is
so broad that not all the information could be easily explained within the confines of this paper, such as the
entire history of World War II. Make several drafts of the paper. Avoid the usage of slang words. Avoid making
personal references to yourself in the paper. Do use a Dictionary and a Thesaurus and consult both often.
When using a quotation, work it into the text of your paper smoothly using a transitional sentence.
Acknowledge all paraphrases. All paraphrases should be handled like quotations, list the source material from
which it comes. Failure to give credit for paraphrases is a very serious offense and should be handled with
great care on your part. If in doubt, always give credit. Quotations must be carefully selected and used only
when necessary to bring out a point you are trying to make. Do not write half of your paper as a mass of
quotations, this shows poor scholarly abilities. I want to see what you think, not what others think.
Papers that are late will be marked down one full grade. Students who fail to turn in a paper will receive zero
points. It is the students’ responsibility to contact the instructor and arrange to deliver the paper. Papers
MUST be printed and delivered, to count towards the grade. Papers that are less than the minimum required
length will be marked down two full grades. A minimum of three books (not to include textbooks,
encyclopedias, etc.) on the subject you are trying to research must be used. However; two books and three
articles (newspapers, magazines, or internet sites) may be used instead. Works Cited Page: Please use the MLA
style. An example of the MLA style is given out at the same time as this page.
Students who wish to try to receive an “A” for their paper should have a minimum of 12 pages. Students who
wish to try to receive a “B” for their paper should have 9 to 11 pages. Students who wish to try to receive a “C”
for their paper should have 5 to 8 pages. This DOES NOT include the Title Page or the Works Cited Page.
