Your Literature Review should include the following:
Introduction (1 – 1.5 pages in length)
Introduce the research topic (e.g., what is it, why does it matter). This is where you provide any background information that helps your reader to understand the topic.
Provide your research question for the review and thesis (i.e., argument).
Briefly outline how you have organized the review (e.g., articles in support of a particular position, those against, and those offering alternative theses).
Should go from general to specific
Body (3.5 – 5 pages in length)
Headings. Use theme headings to organize your review (see below)
This section should have a clearly stated argument, and should be developed in a way that all of its elements work together to communicate a well-reasoned account of that argument. An effective review of literature is organized to make a point. You need to describe how the studies relate to one another. This should support your main purpose for writing the review. You should avoid frequent restatements that rehash what you have already stated.
Headings. Literature reviews are not divided into a fixed set of specific sections, but you should use headings to identify major sections that show organization of the paper. You should avoid the standard headings of research articles (Introduction, Method, etc.). Instead, use specific, conceptual headings. For example, if you are reviewing whether facial expressions are understood universally, heading might include Studies in Western Cultures and Studies in Non-Western Cultures. Organize your argument into topics that fit under each heading.
Conclusion ( 1 – 2 paragraphs in length)
Synthesize the findings you described in the body into a succinct summary.
Discuss your final conclusions. Need to make clear how the information provided in the body of the review has supported the thesis in the introduction
Discuss any questions that remain.
