When Douglas writes “Slavery proved as injurious to her as it did to me”, I think he is saying that slavery can turn the sweetest, most caring person in someone you would barley recognize. He says “When I went there, she was a pious, warm, and tender-hearted woman.” (Douglas 1024) He talks about how she feed people who were hungry and gave clothes to naked. She was a loving and giving woman. But he says that “Slavery soon proved its ability to divest her of these heavenly properties” (Douglas 1024) He explains that she became even more violent than her husband. I would think that owning slaves would change anyone. Being in charge of another human being and thinking of yourself as thier “master”, I feel like it would cause some to become depressed and to feel terrible about themselves and the only way to keep those feelings from overwhelming you would be to just make yourself not care at all.
