Instructions:
This is an individual assignment. For this assignment you will complete a draft News/Policy Brief. You will choose a recent news article related to the topics covered in lecture. Specifically, find an article that includes some kind of economic policy proposal (i.e., minimum wage, carbon tax, rent control, international trade agreement, government stimulus, etc.). Alternatively, you may find an article that includes some kind of economic problem or issue related to inefficiency or inequity (i.e., pollution, traffic congestion, unaffordable housing, social inequality, etc.) and propose a policy intervention. Some potential news outlets you might consider include:
Wall Street Journal: wsj.com (Links to an external site.)
Bloomberg: bloomberg.com (Links to an external site.)
New York Times: nytimes.com (Links to an external site.)
Washington Post: washingtonpost.com (Links to an external site.)
Financial Times: ft.com (Links to an external site.)
Note: Most of these sites require a subscription but allow you to view a certain number of articles for free. You may need to navigate to the “Economics” or “Business” section to find a relevant article. Alternatively, you could try searching Google News (https://news.google.com/ (Links to an external site.)), then navigate to the “Business” or “Economy” section. Google News articles are generally free and accessible. You can also search for news articles through the UW-Madison Library site: https ://researchguides.library.wisc.edu/newspapersLinks to an external site.
After you have identified an article, in max 1 page, double-spaced, 12 point font, identify and define some topics covered in class.
You will use this article for your final policy brief where you must provide a clear or novel interpretation, expand on the concepts learned in class in a meaningful way and show that you understood the article and its application. In other words, demonstrate that you remember, understand, and can apply the topics covered in class, and can evaluate market/policy-relevant news using what we learned in the course.
While this assignment is only a draft of your News/Policy Brief it may be worth looking at the grading rubric of the final assignment.
Grading Rubric:
Excellent (2 pts.): You correctly identified and defined at least 3 topics covered in class.
Good (1.5 pts.): You correctly identified and defined at least 2 topics covered in class.
Fair (1 pts.): You correctly identified topics covered in class but did not defined them.
Poor (0.5 pts.): You attempt to identify a relevant news article, but fail to connect the article to the relevant class material.
Very poor (0 pts.): You substantially misapply the course material or depart from the assignment’s instructions, such as by not finding a relevant article.
