Directions for Completing the Assessment
Choose one of the multi-media class room observations found in EDL 572 under course resources. The observations are differentiated among elementary, middle and high school scenarios. Through this process put yourself in the role of an educational school leader. You will observe one lesson, analyze the strengths and areas of improvement in the lesson, relate this to the four Danielson domains, discuss how this information would be shared with the teacher (feedback), develop mutual goals, create a professional development plan based on the goals.
I. Introduction
Describe the classroom setting/environment.
What were the teacher’s goals for the instruction?
What is the curriculum context for the lesson?
II. Observation
Using your district’s framework (Danielson/Marzano/hybrid) with the instructional domains, create a format to detail your observations and take notes on the competencies observed.
Describe how these competencies align to the framework?
What are the critical components including appropriate technologies observed during the observation that you would share with the teacher?
III. Application
Based upon your learnings about effective supervision including throughout your internship activities describe the process you would use to share this information with the teacher? Cite supporting evidence for your assertions.
What in-depth reflective questions would you ask the teacher about the lesson?
What process would you use to work with the teacher to develop one-two goals for growth?
What professional development would be beneficial to support those goals?
Consider the use of technology, instructional strategies, appropriate assessment techniques, etc.
Now that you have considered the needs for the teacher you observed, describe how you would evaluate, develop, and implement systems of supervision, support, and evaluation designed to promote school improvement and student success (NELP 7.4).
Describe how you will evaluate, develop, and implement high-quality and equitable academic and non-academic instructional practices, resources, technologies, and services that support student and adult learning. (NELP 4.2)
Describe how you will evaluate, develop, and implement the school’s curriculum, instruction, technology, data systems, and assessment practices in a coherent, equitable, and systematic manner. (NELP 4.4)
IV. Reflection
In what ways does your process mirror and a window to your current school’s supervision practices?
How would you move forward strategically with a different / more effective supervision protocol in your school? More specifically, how would you engage staff in a collaborative professional culture designed to promote school improvement, teacher retention, and the success and well-being of each student and adult in the school. (NELP 7.2)
How would you personally engage in, as well as collaboratively engaged school staff in professional learning designed to promote reflection, cultural responsiveness, distributed leadership, digital literacy, school improvement, and student success? (NELP 7.3)
How would you evaluate, cultivate, and advocate for equitable, inclusive and culturally responsive instruction and behavior support practices among teachers and staff?
V. Leadership Lessons
How does this reflection challenge you as you approach your own practice?
What do you predict are the leadership complexities in supervision? How would you advocate for changes in the profession?
