Although the video clip you watched on trick-or-treating was only about a minute in duration, there is a lot you can say about child rearing in the U.S. and American culture based upon it. This shows the potential of what can be done by analyzing a short snippet of conversation. Use this forum to discuss possible points of analysis of this clip. Consider things like body language, intonation, cultural norms, etc. These are examples of the kinds of analyses you will be doing in your ethnography of communication assignment.

Most literature on child development portrays the Western process of language acquisition as a universal and singular process. How is this view being altered by ethnographic research showing that the process, especially in regards to the role of the caretaker, is quite different in other cultures? What are the similarities and differences in how language is acquired by children in the three cultures highlighted in the Ochs/Schieffelin article? What do the processes of language socialization tell us about the belief systems of the different cultures? How is the use of the language one learns as a child related to the way that child thinks about the world in which they live?
