Before answering this discussion question, be sure to FIRST complete this week’s readings and McCroskey’s Public Speaking Anxiety Assessment.
Take a moment to assess, analyze and reflect on your experience with speech anxiety.
On a scale from 1-10 (1=none at all and 10=a great deal of anxiety), identify the level of anxiety you have experienced while giving speeches in the past.
Reflect on your anxiety self assessment score (see previous page in this module): If you feel comfortable, share your score but it is not required. Did you score as you expected? Why or why not? (explain your answer)
If you were to give one of your classmates advice about how to best handle being anxious about giving a speech, what would that advice be? (Hint: think of a time when you performed successfully in front of an audience such as playing a sport, musical instrument, or acting in a play. The strategies used to combat nervousness then may help you combat nervousness when giving a speech.) How does it compare to the advice given in the book chapter 10: Delivering a Speech – Public Speaking Anxiety pp. 341-346?
