Activity #9: Current issues in international sport
In these chapters, you how sociocultural issues intersect with working in the sport industry. Sport management is directly linked in theory and practice to sport sociology because both areas are influenced by the cultural and societal aspects of sport and physical activity. Understanding and appreciating the field of sport sociology can provide an important foundation for understanding the field of sport management. To be effective, sport managers must be aware of the social aspects of sport. Considering that sport managers work with people in social settings, they must understand individuals and their social environments because they are continuously interacting and affecting each other. Sport managers can play an essential role in developing safe, positive, and enriching sport environments. When they do so, people can participate more fully and effectively in all aspects of sport as athletes, employees, fans, clients, or consumers. In addition, you discussed the international perspective of sport, with specific attention to how it affects sport practitioners. Current issues in international sport include concerns associated with governance, gender equity, environmental sustainability, and corruption. To be successful internationally, aspiring sport managers must have the appropriate skills and knowledge, open minds and cultural sensitivity, strong communication skills, and business etiquette. The future of international sport will occur in a world that is becoming smaller because of technology, a global community that is aware of social and ethical concerns that can be addressed through sport, and a world citizenry that possesses a heightened commitment to environmental concerns related to reducing the negative impact on the environment. Career opportunities in international sport will expand for people who are oriented to the global marketplace and possess the ability to integrate new technologies including the effective use of social media.
