Review the following Interactive StoryMaps highlighting the use of geography skills and geographic information science technology for economic and business decision-making: Location Analytics in Business; Customer Lifestyle Profile Analysis for Market Research; and Optimizing Home Delivery with Location Services. Consider the following questions: What is spatial analysis and how can it be used to make better, more informed decisions about locating a new business location and expanding the network of an existing business? In addition to the example presented in the StoryMap, describe other examples for the use of spatial analysis to inform decision-making. How can a small or large business use the geography of a lifestyle profile analysis to improve marketing efforts, enhance service offerings, and identify key market areas for new business locations? In what ways can geography and geographic information science technology be used to enhance a business’s supply chain management to different business locations and market areas/regions?
Review the Interactive StoryMap, Sacred Places, Sacred Ways: Five Great Religions, Five Revered Spaces. By examining a variety of religious practices around the world, we can see examples of abstract and material manifestations of culture and cultural geography. As the StoryMap observes, “Faith and religious worship are traits common to all human cultures. As individuals and communities seek meaning beyond their daily lives, they project their faith onto their physical environment. They link faith to place.” As such, this StoryMap explores a sacred place or pilgrimage for five of the world’s major religions: Islam, Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, and Buddhism. After reviewing the StoryMap, describe examples of both abstract and material elements of culture, and examples of cultural diffusion, that impact the cultural geography of place and space for each of the five sacred places and pilgrimages discussed. How do elements of globalization impact each of the five place examples?
After reviewing the Interactive StoryMap, On Foot in the Path of the Silk Road, consider the following questions. How is the historic Silk Road an example of early forms of economic and cultural globalization? What are examples of cultural diffusion that the Silk Road facilitated? What are examples of some of the barriers that hindered economic and cultural diffusion along the route of the Silk Road and how did people overcome those barriers? In what ways does the Silk Road offer lessons about early forms of economic and cultural globalization? What are examples of ways in which the modern Silk Road plays a role in contemporary forms of economic and cultural globalization?
