Traveling Through the Dark”: Questions for Analysis
Directions: Before attempting to answer these questions, be sure you have viewed the presentation on “Vocabulary for Analyzing Poetry.”
At a literal level, Stafford’s poem can seem very straightforward, but as with many poems, when considering it further and recognizing the poetic devices one can start to discover meaning at a deeper level. Please consider the following questions and write down your thoughts:
1. Think about the title. Besides the literal meaning of driving at night, what else might “traveling through the dark” mean? What might dark or darkness signify?
2. The title and first line mention traveling through the dark. Where in the poem do we see references to light? What type of light? What is its source?
3. Where is personification used in the poem? Why do you think Stafford does this?
4. In the video, it said that theme is the message for mankind that the piece of literature creates and that the key to this may be in looking at what the various characters in the poem might represent. This poem has four “characters”: the speaker, the deer, its unborn fawn, and the car. If the speaker represents mankind, what might the other characters represent?
5. Again in considering theme, the video told us to look at how conflict is resolved in the poem. The speaker has an internal conflict regarding what to do about the unborn fawn. Taking the previous response regarding what each of the characters represent, what does his choice say about theme?
