Assignment Details: Choose a mass media property from the last few years (television show, album, film, video game, comic book etc.) and determine its parent company. a. Which of the “Big Five” (i.e. ATT/Time Warner, Disney/21st Century Fox, Comcast, CBS, Viacom) own it? If it is not owned by one of the Big Five, it is not appropriate for this assignment – like a self-released album, an indie film, or a Web series. Who owns each of those? Note: If it has spawned an enormous number of products, pick 5-10 of the biggest and analyze those. 3) How was the property promoted synergistically? Can you determine the marketing budget, where ads were placed, and/or what television shows the principals appeared on (e.g. band appearing on SNL, actor on Ellen)? Did this demonstrate synergy? 4) Does this property demonstrate vertical integration, horizontal integration, or both? Explain how. 5) Convey this information in any way you wish – a table, an essay, a flowchart, an infographic, etc. Make sure you have answered all the questions. 6) Be sure to include direct reference (properly cited) to course readings and any outside sources.
