 You are to take your media chapter OR your special interest group chapter and apply concepts of the
chosen chapter to a topic dealing with Civil Liberties/Civil Rights. You will need to know how the chapter
help to define and analyze political science issues. Once you understand this component you will be able to
find appropriate examples/focus topics in your Civil Liberties/Civil Rights chapter. The majority of information
can be found in the supplied PowerPoints for the Civil Liberties/Civil Rights chapters and the chapter you
choose to use. Two (2) additional credible outside resources are mandatory for data research.
 You can incorporate sub-issues for analysis if needed and if they pertain to your paper. Not all papers will
require this. (example: You choose to focus on NAACP and want to speak about desegregation cases, the
subtopic is the desegregation topic and case, the main topic may be the NAACP. ) The subtopics are NOT
the main focus of the paper, they are subtopics that can be used for analysis purposes to address the bigger
topic. If a topic is mentioned but not gone in-depth in book, you can use and rely of outside research.
Example
 Each textbook chapter contains ideas and vocabulary that can be used to dissect and explain all of the
above. You may also use supplied PowerPoints and class resources. If you choose a topic that is State
centered – the State MUST be California. Your California textbook can also be used. If you choose a
Federal issue that does not deal with state issues, that is also acceptable for your paper.
 You should be able to get a minimum of 5 pages of analysis from each chapter being applied to the topic.
Additional credible resources come from your need to find data about the topic or the focus of your paper.
When you submit your paper, ensure the following:
• It is in APA format (cover page, running header, abstract, reference page etc.)
• It contains a minimum of three credible resources (one mandatory is your textbook since you are required to use
chapters)
• It shows that you can apply critical thought to a topic of choice using your chapters as a diagnostic tool
• It DOES NOT contain any opinion on the topic or presents as slanted toward a particular side of an issue.
• It is not in a PRO/CON format
