One aspect of researching and writing history papers that many students often struggle with is connected to evaluating sources and creating an interpretation of an historical event. Too often students are satisfied with finding a single secondary source and paraphrasing its interpretation of the event. This falls far short of the goal of having students evaluate a variety of sources and create their own understanding of an event based on multiple accounts and/or viewpoints.
Read the three print sources connected to the Indian Removal Act of 1830. Using only these sources write a paragraph explaining what the Indian Removal Act was and why it was important.
Here are some additional requirements:
Your assignment should consist of a single paragraph (do not write a paper here).
You should correctly site the sources you used in creating your interpretation and writing the paragraph. The following page in this module includes instructions for using proper footnotes.
You cannot quote directly from the two secondary sources (although the information used form the sources must still be cited).
If you wish, you can quote directly from the primary source.
You are to save your footnoted paragraph in either a .doc or .pdf format and submit it to the assignment folder in our D2L Brightspace site. I will evaluate your paragraph and assign separate grades for the interpretation and for the documentation (or your use of proper footnotes).
