An Assertion is a stylistic approach or technique involving a strong declaration, a forceful or confident and positive statement regarding a belief or a fact.
There
is no designated format for the White Paper Outline. Your outline and
assertion (thesis) will have at a minimum: Thesis statement and brief
summary of what each section of the body will contain.
Your
topic will be “What would I change about the Army and why”. Your
assertion (positional thesis) must define your position and why you are
taking that position. The why then forms the basis of the body of your
paper. Keep in mind that what you would do to solve the current problem
would form the basis of your solution paragraph, not your thesis.
Here is an example of a thesis statement:
The
death penalty should be abolished in America because it is racist,
ineffective at reducing crime, and targets impoverished Americans.
This
gives a clear position, death penalty should be abolished, and clearly
states to your reader what will be discussed as evidence to support your
assertion within the paper. You should not create a mystery with a well
written thesis.
