Answer the following questions.
One of the ideas put forward by Martin Luther in his break with the
Catholic Church, known as the Protestant Reformation, was the concept
that people did not need an intercessor between them and god. Everyone
could arrive at truth by reading and interpreting the scriptures for
themselves. This lead to many different sects of Protestantism. One of
these sects, Calvinism, was lead by John Calvin who put forward the
idea of predestination. In the “Doctrine of Predestination”, Calvin
suggested that since god was all-knowing, he must know who will be saved
and who will not be saved. However, how is one to know if they have
been selected? He urged Christians to live as though they have been
selected, to work hard, and have good moral conduct. As your book
states “Among Calvinists, wealth was taken to be a sign of god’s favor,
and the ‘work ethic’ was held in high esteem”.
1. What are your thoughts on the doctrine of predestination?
2.
What else is happening at this time (the 1500’s) that might conflict
with the notion of earned wealth as a result of hard work?
