Audience and Purpose Graphic Organizer
Assignment:
Before beginning, please read pages 111-117 of the APA manual that discuss rules of practice for addressing academic audiences according to APA standards.
This week, you will utilize a graphic organizer to demonstrate your understanding of audience and purpose. Please review the step by step instructions below to complete this week’s submission. Use the guiding questions to craft your responses. You will want to open the attached template before reading the following instructions.
Using the APA manual and what you know about each of the identified audiences, you will fill out the provided template.
Instructions:
In the upper rows of each column – What is typed in blue will be left alone. In column two, you will fill in the “Audience” and “Purpose” rows with an audience and purpose that would be applicable to your future position as a counselor, academic advisor, teacher, instructional coach, etc. Please make sure that your audience is an adult or group of adults.
Under “Writing Attributes,” consider what type of language and stylistic practices would need to be incorporated to effectively reach the identified audience. This should be a list of dos, don’ts, and general expectations for the identified audience, purpose, and mode (at least ten bullets for both columns). Consider the following:
How does the purpose guide the language and tone within academic writing? What are the expectations for academic writing? Are there certain practices that are not appropriate for academic writing? How do those differ when you move from academic writing to less formal communication, like an email? While there may be some overlap in your lists, there should be some distinct differences. While both should be professional, the expectations for an email vary significantly from those of an academic paper.
Under “Audience Assumptions” you will identify at least three assumptions about your audience that would guide your writing. For each point, briefly explain how you would change your writing based on the assumption. Consider the following:
Who will be reading your writing? What do you know about them? What is it that you do not know about them? How will that change the way that you approach the paper? Will you speak to them again? Does that change the type of impression you want to leave with them and, in turn, change the tone of your writing? What choices do you make in light of the expectations of the reader(s)? How are those choices driven by your assumptions?
Example: If my audience is an 8-year-old girl, I assume that her vocabulary is limited and simplify the language in my writing to ensure that she understands the message.
Be sure to appropriately cite information within text. If nothing else, everyone should be utilizing the APA manual to complete this assignment.
Introduction and Outline Paper
Instructions:
Step One:Write your introduction. 4-5 sentences.
Establish the relevance of the problem through research and practical perspective. Include a clear thesis statement identifying the main points of your paper. If you did a good job with your problem in practice statement, you should be able to use that sentence as your thesis statement.
Consider the following:
What is the social context of the problem?
What is the historical background leading up to the problem?
Are there any major economical/political factors that contribute to the problem?
Could you find statistics that would help establish the problem?
As the writer, you must decide on the best method to establish the problem. These are just some ideas to stimulate your thinking. There are a number of ways that you could approach this introduction.
Step two:Put together an outline for the rest of your paper. A template has been provided.
Three points to support your problem are required for this assignment. Remember that to establish your authority and reinforce your ideas, each body paragraph should cite at least two peer-reviewed sources. The more paragraphs you have, the more research will be required to hit level four on the rubric for your Problem in Practice paper.
While you will write a full introduction, the rest is an outline. Please follow the format provided in the sample.
Step three: Provide a reference list. You may use all the resources from your annotated bibliography but will need to seek out additional research to complete this assignment.
