In our earlier lecture we spoke about literature as argument. Poetry, as a type of literature, can also be an argument. While not all poetry is attempting to make a point or advance an idea (some poetry is just to create an image or even to celebrate the sound of words), much poetry is creating an argument. In the poems that we focus on for this class, the poets are definitely trying to communicate an idea/make a claim.
Remember that all literature involves a series of choices on the part of the writer. In poetry, writers use the devices talked about in the presentation you viewed this week, as well as the situations in poetry to make a point. However, as mentioned in our earlier lecture, often the point is not clearly stated, as it would be in an essay, and thus poetry is much more open to interpretation (which in itself is an argument about the poem’s meaning).
This means that, just as we saw in the discussion of the “Three Little Pigs,” that different people can have different interpretation of the meaning of a poem. There is not one “right” or “correct” interpretation of a poem or piece of literature. There are multiple interpretations possible — however, that does not mean that anything goes. The quality or strength of an interpretation is judged by the evidence that is presented in support of the interpretation (just as any argument is judged by the strength of the evidence).
The evidence that is presented when analyzing poetry is supporting quotes from the poem. When you make a claim about a poem, you should support your interpretation by finding the language in the poem, the words or lines, that make you draw that conclusion about the poem.
