For Essay 2, you will write a poetry explication of at least 500 words over one work of poetry that we have read for this
class. Any poem we have read for class is permitted EXCEPT Aphra Behn’s “On Her Loving Two Equally.” Note: If there is
another poem you would like to write about for Essay 2, it MUST be approved by me first, and you must request approval
WHAT AM I WRITING? I DON’T UNDERSTAND?: By now, you have read at least two handouts explaining how to
write about poetry, including a sample poetry explication 4, and a helpful handout 4,. RE-READ THESE TWO
HANDOUTS to prepare for the poetry explication essay.
In addition, I recently found another handout on writing about poetry that I think you’ll find very helpful. Please read it

Format: Your poetry explication must use MLA format for the entire essay, including the formatting of the document, as
well as proper use of quotations, paraphrases, and a Works Cited page.
A note on outside sources: I highly recommend you do not use any outside sources that explain the poem. Instead, rely
On your own understanding of the poem. The only outside source I would highly recommend is a dictionary, since
understanding poetry often requires you to better understand specific words in unique ways.
