Purpose: You will gain a general understanding of the multiple roles managers play and the different levels of managerial jobs, as well as a detailed understanding of the role of “leading.”
Part 1: 4 Management Roles
For each of the 4 traditional management functions (planning, directing, leading, controlling), provide the following:
a. A short definition (in your own words) of what that functions entails
b. Two examples of specific tasks or functions that role might include in a typical organization
Provide an example of a task (not the ones you listed before) that cuts across at least two categories (for example a task that involves both planning and controlling). Make sure to explain clearly how your response answers the question.
For you personally, rank the four roles from best to worst in terms of how well they fit your personality and skills. For each one provide a sentence or two of explanation for why you ranked it where you did.
Part 2: How does the job of manager change over your career?
Briefly define the roles of top manager, middle manager, and first-line (or line) manager.
In your current organization (or one you are familiar with), describe a typical job at the levels of top manager, middle manager, and first-line (or line) manager. Provide enough details about the job so a reader can understand it. Note that smaller organizations may not have all these roles, so try to choose one that does.
Now, explain briefly why the jobs you named fit the roles you assigned them to.
Part 3: Ways to Lead
Review the Blake/Mouton Leadership Grid (text exhibit 14.1, or below), which nicely summarizes the preceding section of your chapter. Make sure you understand its implications for both employees and productivity. For example, you should know which of the sections of the grid represents a company where strong-willed loners might thrive because they need little attention and are driven to produce solid corporate results, or which section is where Mike would want to work if he needs lots of support and encouragement?
Choose 2 of the 5 management style boxes on the grid. For each one you choose:
a. Describe the behaviors and actions of a manager (real or fictitious) who leads in that way. For this one, don’t just make someone up, but describe a person you have worked with (no names please) or a fictional character.
b. Now consider the organizations where your chosen managers work. For each of the two managers, predict the organization’s financial and human resource outcomes and justify your response using the grid (in other words, if the company runs for a while with the style of leadership you are discussing, how will it do financially and in terms of its workforce?). Note that the model predicts what is most likely to happen, not what will always happen, so make sure your response uses the model and your readings to make the prediction, and cite these sources (in APA format) to support your response. Don’t just rely on a single specific situation you have observed to make your case.
