In Week 3, we encounter the printing press (See image above), mathematical perspective in art, major changes in how fortresses were built, and the impact of the rediscovery of Ptolemy’s map. Mathematical perspective revolutionized imagery and, in turn, revolutionized the way people saw their world and their place in it. The printing press presented problems of censorship and war in response to the sudden availability of ideas that challenged the status quo. Developments in mapmaking shaped the way people envisioned the world, exploration, empire, and dispossession.
We examine how technology and worldview have transformed one another over time through a number of innovations in thinking and technological development. Think back to Week 1 and the opposing ideas of SCOT (Social Constructivism of Technology) versus Technological Determinism. Which idea seems to prevail this week?
