The goal of an argument research proposal is to create a working argument stance and a basic plan that considers context, audience, and purpose and that presents potential approaches to research.
Keep in mind that rather than being an outline or structural plan for your essay, this proposal should ground you in the conversation, should offer direction for research needs, and should give your professor ample focused material viable for providing effective feedback before you begin researching and writing.

Misconceptions About Argument
“I prefer to avoid conflict.”: We hear this a lot,
especially in an age in which “arguments” about important issues
flare up and become heated in venues like social media. We see anger, even
name-calling, in opinion-based debates, which may cause us to stifle our
authentic thoughts and to believe that expressing a stance is either scary or a
sign of anger and meanness. We also, from a young age, equate
“arguing” with “fighting” in general. Our parents arguing,
for example, may upset us badly, and “arguments” between peers at
school can turn nasty and may result in horrible bullying. Even in our college
classes, differing opinions are often taken personally, resulting in hurt
feelings and defensiveness in the classroom.
Therefore, it is quite natural, even expected, that by the
time we reach adulthood, we see the word “argument” and have a gut
“fight or flight” reaction. We either express our opinions loudly, or
we stick our fingers in our ears (“Na-Na-Na-Na; I can’t hear you!”)
and find a corner to hide in.
However: Are these the only two possible reactions for
dealing with an “argument”?
Stop for a moment and think about all of these negative
situations and why each is scary or anger-inducing?
So, why should we embrace argument, debate, and rhetoric in
writing? Why is it indeed imperative that we do? The answer is simple: almost
everything is an argument. Whether we realize it at the time, all of the issues
and conflicts we resolve, all of the instructions we interpret and follow in
our own way, all of the choices that we make, small and large, rely on
argumentative techniques.
So, we argue to:
think
critically
consider
other viewpoints with a more open mind
explore
the range and history of thought and breakthroughs to which argument has
contributed
be
respectful and helpful in debates, no matter how small or large
problem-solve
Most importantly: We learn how to effectively influence
powerful, positive changes in our immediate environment and in the world.
Often life events that contain conflict can lead to positive
changes and choices in our lives, such as choosing a profession, or discovering
a talent that makes a difference in the lives of others. Robert Stains, Jr.
(2003), for example, notes health care trainees who “describe life events
that are linked to their ‘calling’ to become practitioners.” Examples
include a student who “speaks of discovering a knack for peacemaking when
thrust into a fight between friends,” while another describes
“struggling with family members over a dying relative’s health care and
wishing for better facilitation skills” (p. 475), prompting a passion for
an end-of-life specialization in health care.
In short, argument has been instrumental in
virtually every improvement in the lives of humans and of other living beings
in recorded history, and argument has also led to humanitarian horrors.
