READ / READ – Thinking through the Past by John Hollitz chapter 1, The “Story” of Reconstruction. Note title of each chapter. Usually, the title sets the stage for focus, theme and topics. In Hollitz, note any differences between what is included and excluded. This will be a comparison between the four authors in the Hollitz chapter. The sources come from a historian’s perspective. We may think that this is an un-bias and academic point of view. But, we are all shaped by our culture, community, experience and education. There are omissions that shape how we look at US History, other groups, and our place in the world. We are also shaped by the commission of narratives that do the same.
Essay question:
“What is the author’s (Hollitz sources 1,2, 3, and 4) Wilson, Woodson, Bailey, and Norton, respectively) view of the integrity and the effectiveness of those involved in the Republican governments in the Southern states? Is the view of the ‘carpetbaggers’ and ‘scalawags’ positive, negative, or neutral?” What was the author’s view of such terrorist organizations as the Ku Klux Klan?
How does each source differ? What is the tone and language used?
NOTE:
Your essays throughout this history course (and probably throughout your academic career) should include the following components:
An Introduction- sets up the paper. Gives reader a clear indication of what your paper is about, and what your position/interpretation might be. This is written in one (maybe two) paragraphs.
The Body- supports your introduction and you should have a minimum of three paragraphs. I’m not a stickler for grammar; yet the point I want to make is that the body is not one big clump of sentences. Break up your points and ideas, i.e.,
Differences between the authors’ presentation and their perspective.
Authors’ view of the colonist
Authors’ view of the Indians
Bias (language, style, omissions) in presentation
“Above are a few examples.”
The Conclusion- reiterates or emphasizes ideas/positions/interpretations/argument that link with your introduction.
Paraphrase the document materials; if you want to quote, do so sparingly. No long quotes. When you paraphrase the material, it shows me you have processed it and you understand it.
Be sure to cite the document you are using. Historians cannot make a claim without providing proof!
If analyzed effectively and sufficiently, this paper should be about 2 to3 pages. Please use 12 point and normal font (e.g. Times New Roman). Make sure it is double-spaced, and has undergone spell and grammar check.
Remember:
All papers need to be submitted through TURNITIN.
