Consider the following words spoken by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau in 1971:
Uniformity is neither desirable nor possible in a country the size of Canada. We should not even be able to agree upon the kind of Canadian to choose as a model, let alone persuade most people to emulate it. There are few policies potentially more disastrous for Canada than to tell all Canadians that they must be alike. There is no such thing as a model or an ideal Canadian. What could be more absurd than the concept of an “all-Canadian” boy or girl? A society which emphasizes uniformity is one which creates intolerance and hate. A society which eulogizes the average citizen is one which breeds mediocrity. What the world should be seeking, and in Canada, we must continue to cherish, are not concepts of uniformity but human values: compassion, love and understanding.

In Canada, we don’t really have the concept of the average or typical Canadian. South of the border, they have the idea of the “all-American” boy or girl but that seems ridiculous to us. We see the idea of uniformity as a concept that leads to racism and other kinds of intolerance. If a society only cares about creating average citizens, it will always create mediocre ones. In Canada, we don’t try to make everyone think the same and be the same; instead, we try to nurture positive values such as love and empathy.

Katrina argues that this idea about Canadian identity has become common knowledge and therefore does not need to be cited in her essay. To what extent is this passage plagiarized?
