write an argumentic essay
Background:
Canada is currently facing a crisis of homelessness. Homelessness is a situation faced by many vulnerable
Canadians who lack the income, access to care, or support in personal crises or trauma that they need to
remain housed. We will study this issue as the topic for Essay 2: Argument re: Causes of homelessness.
People who study the topic of homelessness find strong links between Canada’s housing crisis and
homelessness. Those who are homeless may be so because of economic issues that have impacted their
income and/or their access to affordable housing. However, homelessness is not only rooted in
economics. Others have also pointed out that some people are homeless because of inadequate access to
mental health support, support for addiction, or support for physical disabilities. In addition, personal
trauma or crises, including domestic violence, can often lead to homelessness. Observers point out that
many of these factors that make people vulnerable to homelessness are also intensified by systemic racism.
Because of racism and discrimination, racial minorities, including Indigenous people and immigrants to
Canada, are overly represented in Canada’s homeless population.
In this essay of approximate 750-950 words, you will do a causal analysis to answer the question:
What are the two most important causes of homelessness?
Your causal analysis should include evidence from the assigned readings AND evidence from one or two

This essay will include:
1. Introductory Paragraph

“hook” or attention-getting statement that is clearly related to the topic of your argumentative
essay. It should then clearly explain the current debate surrounding the causes of homelessness.
In your introduction, you should explain the debate by directly referring to articles you have
read. Your introductory paragraph should end with a causal analysis thesis
statement which makes a claim in response to the question “What are the two most important
causes of homelessness” and identifies TWO causes to support your claim.
2. Body Paragraph 1
– Body Paragraph 1 should clearly explain your FIRST cause. It should begin with a topic sentence
claim that identifies one factor that makes individuals vulnerable to homelessness
– You should develop your paragraph using at least TWO SETS of “claim-evidence-explanation”
that explain why you think THIS is an important cause of homelessness Remember, you can use
personal experience once in your essay, expert opinion, scientific research/statistics,
examples/illustration/ or processes etc. to support your point.
– Your body paragraph should end with a concluding sentence that restates your paragraph’s
main point.
3. Body Paragraph 2
– Body Paragraph 2 should clearly identify a second, distinct CAUSE. It should begin with a topic
sentence claim that identifies one factor that makes individuals vulnerable to homelessness
– Your body paragraph should end with a concluding sentence that restates your paragraph’s
main point.
4. 4-5-sentence Conclusion
– End your essay with a 4-5 sentence conclusion that restates your thesis claim and explains the
significance of your essay.
5. Quotations

formatted in MLA style, to support your claims. You may use your quotations and paraphrase in
any paragraph in your essay.
