So one of the elements that you will be working on in the course is writing papers that I refer to as critical analysis, learning reflection, and application to practice papers. So what are these all about? There is in the course quite a number of assigned readings, and one of the dangers when we have a lot of reading to get through is that we slip into passive reading, which is not conducive to learning.
And so what I want to do is encourage you to really engage in what I call active reading which, of course, then will enhance your learning. And these CALRAP papers are an important instrument for really getting you to think very intentionally about what am I reading and what am I learning and how might I use this. And so those three questions, what am I reading is critical analysis. What am I learning is the learning reflection. And how might I use this in the future is the application to practice part.
So CALRAP papers, over the next six weeks, you will complete two of them. The first paper should be completed on the assigned readings for either units two or units three. And then your second CALRAP paper should be completed in either weeks four, five, or six. And it’s your choice upon whether you do the first CALRAP paper on either weeks two or weeks three and when you do your second CALRAP paper whether that’s four weeks four, five, or six. And that’s to give you some flexibility as other demands on your time emerge either from work or from home or from other coursework in that regard.
So let’s just talk generally about these three areas of critical analysis, learning reflection, and application to practice. So as you write these papers, and you’ll see here on this slide a reinforcement of what I’ve just said there, I’m mentioning here that these papers should be at a minimum two double spaced pages. And again, I’m using at a minimum to suggest that if you find yourself writing about a topic that you are particularly passionate, if you found the readings to be particularly interesting, then you have the option of writing a longer paper.
And so one way to do that is you can sort of switch to 1 and 1/2 spacing, for example, and keep it on those two pages. But I want you to know that you don’t have to feel constrained by the two double-spaced pages, but I would encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to write at least two double spaced pages in that regard.
So I’ve also said here in the syllabus that if you wish, you can write those papers as a series of bullet point paragraphs, but each paragraph should contain a minimum of three sentences, and there should be clear argumentation there. Now, you may be thinking, I’m in an analytics program. Why do I need to write what look to be essays? I will point out that the concept of the two page memo has received a resurgence recently, and you may have heard about Jeff Bezos and meetings at Amazon, which are now driven, not by PowerPoints, but by two page memos.
And at some level, the rationale for these papers is very similar. I firmly believe that the writing of a two page reflection on what have been the key elements of what the authors of the assigned readings have written, plus your reflection on what you’ve learned from those writings both within individual articles and across them, plus the third part how you might apply those lessons in your own work environments. Those really lead to very thoughtful learning of the key lessons from the assigned readings.
So other elements here I want to say that those papers should be uploaded prior to the start of the class for which the readings have been assigned. So if you want to write CALRAP, the first part pf CALRAP paper on the readings that are assigned for week two, that paper is due at the start of the live section on week two. If you’re going to wait and write your first CALRAP paper for the readings assigned to week three, then the paper is not due until the start of the live session for week three.
Other general comments here, and I’ll flesh these out more in the guidelines, these papers should not be some simple summaries of what the authors have said. In your mind, remember, I read the articles, you’ve read the articles, there’s no need to rehash what the articles say. Focus your time and effort on critical analysis of what you’ve read, identifying the key lessons you’ve learned, and then describing how you think you might apply those lessons in practice.
