Emotionally Intelligent
Emotional intelligence is the degree to which one perceives, uses, and manages his/her emotions. Emotions are factors that need to be contained, especially when one is in a leadership position or a position of power, because actions are prone to consequences. Thus, to ensure positive consequences, a leader ought to have not only self and social awareness but also self-management and relationship management. This is because awareness and management aid one in communicating effectively, empathizing with others, overcoming challenges, and avoiding conflicts since he/she is placed in a better capacity to face and handle crises with a lower emotional reactivity (Segal et al., 2021). Based on emotional intelligence, this essay aims to evaluate the effects of lack of vision, the importance of leading with passion, problems of being nice, the effects of the prefrontal cortex in decision-making, the importance of building goals on strengths, my learning style, the importance of mentors, and the power of relationships.
How Lack of Vision Fails an Organization
The lack of a clear well-succinct vision fails an organization by creating mayhem and intense imbroglio among employees. Employees are crucial and thus the primary elements that influence the entire organization’s operations. Therefore, they (employees) need to be communicated to and be well informed on the short-term as well as the long-term objectives that the organization needs to achieve in order to develop a sense of direction. Providing direction is thence the sole purpose of a leader’s vision since, through its failure or lack thereof, the organization’s teams will not be propelled in an aligned or unified manner (Bailey, n. d). Furthermore, the organization’s teams will interpret expectations differently, creating conducive environments for conflict with little to no growth. Also, the lack of growth will propel both managerial and employee stressors, hence leading to the formulation of irrational action plans that will lead to staff demotivation and a significant strain on resources (Whatmore, 2016).
How Leading with Passion Helps Maintain Vision
Leading with passion creates a sense of excitement, enthusiasm, and interest among employees as they are fuelled by the leader’s energy to achieve. A visionary leader needs to have a genuine enthusiasm for the organization’s objectives and passionately communicate information with more positive energy. Consequently, by showing outstanding commitment, employees will be equally more dedicated to achieving the common goal and even show more perseverance in situations that may seem intolerable (Zmorenski, n. d). Basically, employees will be more willing to stay on the course since, through their leader, they are more inspired and informed on why the organization does what it does and why they need to make a difference.
Problems Associated with being Nice
By being too nice, one is always expected to be giving, a situation that, in return, will make him/her develop unrealistic expectations toward those he/she has been helping (Rosselit, n. d). By always being seen as a giver, people will often expect one to do everything for them. They will not consider one’s boundaries or limits, making one become overburdened and susceptible to stress, burnout, or poor mental health (Wakefield, 2017). On the other hand, by constantly giving, one will expect others to do the same for him/her regardless of their given position. Hence, according to Rosselit (n. d), when they fail to do the same or meet the set expectations, one is likely to take it too personally and even develop resentment or anger.
How Prefrontal Cortex Affect Decision Making
The prefrontal cortex influences decision-making by coordinating multiple neural processes, which determine an individual’s capacity to achieve goals. Decision-making, a significant part of the executive function, is accurately influenced by the prefrontal cortex when one is under a free choice condition (Funahashi, 2017). Consequently, during decision-making, prefrontal neurons exhibit transient activation that transfers signals, influencing one to consider a specific option contrary to the other available ones. According to Funahashi (2017), this transient activation is likely to be a result of spontaneous firing and its irregular fluctuation that makes one establish a bias toward one specific option.
Why Goals should be built on Strengths
Goals ought to be built on an individual’s strengths because we have different behaviors, personality traits, and abilities. Each of us is unique; thus, by having specific natural talents, goals have to be well-aligned with what one is good at for any chance of success (Horn, 2021). Basically, by focusing on one’s natural talents, not only does the success rate tends to be higher, but one tends to have knowledge of his/her capabilities and sufficient information on what is exciting to him/her. In consequence, one is challenged to identify his/her limits, manage his/her weaknesses, and formulate appropriate and newer ways to drive change.
My Learning Style
Each individual perceives and assimilates information differently; hence, based on three primary learning styles- Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic- my learning mode is more inclined toward the visual learning style. According to Fleming (2020), auditory learners are more oriented toward sound and speech. Thus, they are more comfortable listening and then taking notes afterward or reading out notes loud enough to facilitate their comprehension. Kinesthetic learners adopt a hands-on approach, thereby fully comprehending material by practicing and imitating. Also, they would rather demonstrate a concept than verbally explain it (Roell, 2018). Finally, Visual learning (my cognitive learning style) is more centered on graphical objects, charts, and pictures. Consequently, through this learning style, one understands better by turning notes into road maps to enhance his/her comprehension. Furthermore, one only understands a concept better by writing it down and avoiding distractions such as windows or doorways (Roell, 2019).
Importance of Mentors and Coaches
The importance of mentors and coaches is that they act as a knowledge source, help set goals, and enhance self-awareness (Indeed Editorial Team, 2021; Chakraborty, 2019). In acting as a source of knowledge, both mentors and coaches provide helpful information and insight regarding particular skillsets. Fundamentally, they engage their tutees for a specified period encompassed with a given schedule, enabling them to track the tutees’ progress and assess whether he/she demonstrates progress. In setting goals, both mentors and coaches provide tutees with an opportunity to set professional and personal development objectives, which they continually follow up to ensure an equal prioritization of each task. Conclusively, in enhancing self-awareness, they both enable tutees to carry out self-assessments on their mental, psychological, and emotional aspects to strengthen their emotional intelligence.
The Power of Relationships
Constructive relationships generate a positive feedback loop by enhancing not only social but also emotional and physical wellbeing. Individuals who have higher levels of social connection tend to experience a higher quality of life than those isolated. Essentially, according to Victoria State Government (2022), such people have higher self-esteem, low rates of anxiety/depression, greater empathy, and more trustful personalities. Moreover, according to Acenda (n. d), people with such healthy relationships have higher levels of confidence and assurity, which propels them to take risks and chase after their ambitions.
Conclusion
This essay has evaluated the effects of lack of vision, the importance of leading with passion, problems of being nice, the effects of the prefrontal cortex in decision-making, the importance of building goals on strengths, my learning style, the importance of mentors, and the power of relationships. In lack of vision and the importance of leading with passion, the main focus was on the leader’s influence on his employees. In the effects of being nice, the aspect of unrealistic expectations and always being expected to give were examined. The effects of the prefrontal cortex in decision-making explored neural processes. The importance of a strengths-based goal focused on an individual’s natural talents. My learning style assessed all three primary aspects with a focus on the visual learning style. The importance of mentors, as discussed, involved acting as a knowledge source, helping in goal setting, and enhancing self-awareness. Finally, the power of relationships is based on an individual’s social, emotional, and physical well-being.
