Assignment 1: Initial Reflection on Applied Inquiry
Learning objectives
Reflect upon your philosophical worldview and your positionality, in relation to inquiry.
Center equity in framing problems of practice for inquiry.
Assignment description
The purpose of this assignment is for you to reflect upon how your worldview and positionality shape the way you understand the world and the way you view inquiry. This assignment is meant to open a space of reflection about who you are in an unbounded sense, as well as how you are positioned in relation to power structures. Additionally, in line with the mission of the Rossier School of Education, this assignment asks you to center equity, through the framing of a research topic/problem of practice.
The assignment should be double-spaced with 1-inch margins and a total of 2-3 pages long.
Assignment Criteria:
Reflect upon and then discuss, in narrative form, responses to the following questions. Clearly delineate each section with the headers below (i.e., Identity: An Unbounded Description; Positionality; Paradigm of Inquiry; and Connecting the Pieces and Centering Equity)
Identity: An Unbounded Description ( 1 ¶)
Describe yourself. Consider salient aspects of your identity (home & work).
You do not need to relate your description of yourself to social structures or course concepts.
You do not even need to write in a language or format that anyone other than yourself would understand. Rather, this is how you choose to describe yourself.
Art forms are welcome.
No citations needed.
Positionality (1-2 ¶) – Please write in the first person here
Villaverde (2008) defines of positionality as “how one is situated through the intersection of power and the politics of gender, race, class, sexuality, ethnicity, culture, language, and other social factors” (p. 10). Understanding your positionality is a key to consciously working toward equity. Because a) your positionality is always in relation to context and b) this assignment is a step toward consciously framing a focus of inquiry: you are asked to discuss your positionality, in relation to a research topic/problem of practice, of interest.
Please respond to the following questions, in narrative form:
Name a topic of interest, you would like to understand through inquiry. This may be a possible dissertation topic (e.g., mental health in the workplace, racial bias in hiring practices, teacher retention).
What is your relationship to this topic? In other words, what roles do you occupy, in relation to the topic you named? What power structures intersect with your intersectional identities and roles, in relation to the topic you named? (See “Intersecting Wheel of Privilege, Domination, and Oppression” on page 3 of this document to support your analysis).
How does your positioning relative to your topic, situate you to see/understand the problem? In other words, what wisdom do you carry and/or what might you not be able to see/understand?
Paradigm of Inquiry (1 ¶)
Name, define and cite the paradigm of inquiry (i.e., philosophical worldview) with which you most closely align, as you consider the topic you named above.
How does this paradigm inform your lens on your topic?
Explain how your chosen paradigm of inquiry is related to (and possibly shaped by) your positionality.
Connecting the Pieces and Centering Equity (1 -2 ¶)
What is the problem of practice your dissertation topic might address?
In what ways does your problem of practice center equity or connect to issues of equity? Please note, if there is a word closely related to equity, that you prefer to use (e.g., inclusion, access, liberation) please feel free to insert that word instead.
What insights and/or obstacles does your positionality lend to your researching this problem of practice?
How does your chosen paradigm of inquiry position you to research this problem of practice, in a meaningful way?
Make sure to:
Reference at least 1 course reading, with proper citations.
Proofread and check APA style (including adding a title page and a references section).
Upload your assignment to the LMS by the due date in the syllabus.
Grading
There is no rubric for this assignment. However, for full credit, each point above should be addressed.
