In a rhetorical analysis, the goal is to explain what the author is doing well and not so well in achieving his/her goal. First you need to understand the author’s purpose and how he/she is trying to connect with/engage/persuade the audience. In other words, how does the audience (or you) respond/react during the reading? Remember, this can be any decision the author is making. Your analysis can also include decisions the author failed to make, or decisions that did not turn out well.
FOR this assignment, you will be analyzing the sample student IMRaD introduction attached along with this document.
In an IMRAD introduction, the author should be including specific components to achieve his/her/their purpose.
You will read the introduction, note what is working and not working, and why.
Then you will write your analysis in paragraph form (see sample paper).
Guidelines for Rhetorical Analysis
-Include title page appropriate for your discipline’s citation style.
-You do not need to include in-text citations or a bibliography since you are only citing one source.
-Minimum two full pages (this means just short of three pages). Maximum three full pages.
-Double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12-pt font

Example of an analysis of one technique in APA format.
In their article on fake news, Narayanan et al., the authors first explained how big the issue is, including evidence that put monthly Facebook users at 2 billion people and participation rates at 71%. This made me realize just how big Facebook is and how big any of their problems are. The authors went on to explain that in the 2016 election, Twitter found 50,000 accounts linked to Russia, and how Facebook noted that Russian Internet Research Agency had reached 126 million users before the 2016 election. These numbers added to the weight of the problem. The authors also included a lot of numbers in their introduction from different sources, which helped to stabilize their claims and add credibility. I felt like I trusted them more. I would have liked to have seen numbers for total Twitter accounts in order to put the 50,000 Russian accounts into perspective. As it stood, I was distracted while I wondered just how big that number was compared to all accounts. Overall, however, the authors provided substantial evidence to make their audience care.
