Research Teams and Research Topics on Data Mining
Research on one data mining method covered in your data mining course that has been assigned to your team in the Research Assignment Table below. Do this research in the context of the data mining method of your team’s choice, the industry sector represented by your assigned client company and related records. The Research Assignment Table, parts (a), (b) and (c) will help students understand research topics assigned to each team. For part one of the research paper, each team member will identify at least two unique, peer-reviewed, scholarly journal articles that describe how your chosen method of data mining has been used in your client’s industry sector to study similar records that you are researching about. Then the team will combine all team members’ article summaries into one Word document. For part two, each team will propose one new application of the assigned method in the assigned industry. The articles summarized by each member of a research team must be unique—so that there will be 2×6= 12 unique articles summarized in the paper if a team has six members. Part one is worth 100 points and part two is worth 100 points, which add up to the 200 points allocated to the research paper. Assignment of research topics to teams of students will take place in the first week of the semester.
For example, healthcare related entities could be patients, hospitals, nursing homes, pharmacies, medicines, physicians, nurses, diagnostic clinics and the like. Retailing industry related entities could be retailers, manufacturers, distributors, products, convenience stores, restaurants, grocery stores, consumers and the like. Considering and integrating the review of journal articles, the team will identify variables appropriate for their chosen data mining technique that can be useful in the industry and or for the team’s client company. The number of predictor variables should be equal to the number of active members in a team. Each team needs to submit one research report for the team. The first part of the research report will be the summary of the articles, identified by individual summarizer’s name, and the second part of the research report will be about the data mining application idea that the team will generate collectively. The research report should not exceed 2000 words, excluding references. Full references must be provided, using APA format, for the journal articles so that others can retrieve those articles from Bell Library databases. The research paper is worth 200 points. Collect real data, if possible, that can be used for your proposed data mining application and if you cannot collect real data, create a realistic data set, and then do the analytics work you have proposed to do and include its summary and interpretation in your team’s report.
